Little Rat Sets Sail

by Monika Bang-Campbell
Illustrated by Molly Bang

Published by Harcourt, 2002

Ages 4 - 7

Summer means sailing lessons for Little Rat, but she's not very happy about them. She is afraid of falling in the water, even with her life jacket on. And her life jacket is different from everyone else's, gray with lace-up sides. "Everybody else had on neat yellow-and-orange zip-up life jackets. Everybody else was cool." But Little Rat's parents have signed her up and Little Rat goes. Her terrific sailing teacher, Buzzy Bear, is comforting and patient as Little Rat navigates her fears, helping her to try new things at her own speed. As lessons progress, Little Rat's cautious nature never changes, but she learns that some things become less scary once you try them. This terrific, easy-to-read chapter book displays a keen understanding of children's emotions in the context of a lively yet gentle story. (MS; August 19) 2002 Cooperative Children's Book Center
