So Slow!

by Dave and Julie Saunders

Published by U.S. edition: Marshall Cavendish, 2002

Ages 2 - 5

Snail has been sleeping comfortably in a backyard garden underneath a flower pot but when someone moves the pot, he decides to try to find a shady spot. Cat, Wasp, Butterfly, and Spider all tell Snail about the nice cool spot on the other side of the garden wall, but snail moves along so slowly that they all think he'll never reach it, and all the while as he's sliding along, he gets hot and hungry and thirsty. Finally, a friendly centipede shows him a shortcut to the other side through a hole in the wall, and Snail finds all his fast-moving friends waiting there for him. Realistic paintings of backyard creatures in their natural habitat accompany the skillfully crafted patterned text, making this a good choice as a read-aloud for very young children.
