Waiting for Wings

by Lois Ehlert

Published by Harcourt, 2001
28 pages
ISBN: 0-15-202608-8

Ages 3 - 9

Milwaukee artist Lois Ehlert is famous for designing new ways to use page spaces in highly visual children's books. In her newest book Waiting for Wings, the varying page sizes heighten the drama of creation in the natural world. The accompanying words begin "Out in the fields, eggs are hidden from view / clinging to leaves with butterfly glue." Each turning page reveals a new stage of the butterfly chrysalis. Children can literally watch as the chrysalis becomes the colorful insect they see in backyard gardens or while visiting butterfly exhibits in museums or conservatories. Ehlert's visual abstractions show children the natural cycle of change, but they never remove the wonder from this seemingly miraculous event. Using vibrant colors and bold shapes in her painted collage assemblages, she gently offers more than we can learn from personal observation, such as how butterflies eat by unrolling their tongues. Within the final five inviting pages of this unique 12 1/4 x 10 1/4" volume, readers will discover identification information and directions for growing a butterfly garden.
