Next Stop!

by Sarah Ellis
Illustrated by Ruth Ohi

Published by Fitzhenry & Whiteside, 2000
32 pages
ISBN: 1-55041-539-5

Ages 2 - 6

"On Saturday Claire rides the bus. She sits right at the front. She helps the driver. ‘Next stop, Moss Road,' says the driver. ‘Museum,' says Claire. ‘Ding,' says the bell." At each stop the driver makes, Claire announces what can be found at that corner: a ball park, a shopping mall, a library, the hospital. Just as Claire does, young readers see new passengers as they enter the bus and watch as they leave it. The cast of fellow passengers includes such characters as a boy with rainbow shoes, a dad with a baby, five soccer players, and a woman talking on a cell phone, so children can imagine some of what's happening with each person or group once they get off the bus, too. Ellis's lively, patterned text is inhabited by Ohi's extensive, detailed cast of characters. The book is a terrific opportunity for people watching, and it has a satisfying surprise ending. This is a cheerful, contemporary story to read, reread, and even act out. CCBC categories: Picture Books for Younger Children. (GMK; March 26) ©2001 Cooperative Children's Book Center
