Summer: An Alphabet Acrostic

by Steven Schnur
Illustrated by Leslie Evans

Published by Clarion, 2001

Ages 6 - 10

Many children enjoy word searches, crossword puzzles, and acrostics. The book Summer offers acrostic word-play along with 26 images of hot weather summer experiences. From being "Idle" in a hammock during July heat to dealing with "Millions" of stinging insects, each alphabet letter is examined through a midsummer lens. True to acrostic requirements, the first word of each line on a single page vertically spells a summery word such as "hike," "mosquitoes," and "picnic." Schnur and Evans have collaborated on similar books about Spring (Clarion, 1999) and Autumn (Clarion,1997). (GMK; July 30) 2001 Cooperative Children's Book Center
