Satchel Paige

by Lesa Cline-Ransome
Illustrated by James E. Ransome

Published by Simon & Schuster, 2000
32 pages
ISBN: 0-689-81151-9

Ages 8 - 11

The baseball great nicknamed Satchel was the first African American pitcher to be drafted into the major leagues (and that, at age 42), the first Black to pitch in a major league World Series, and the first Black Baseball Hall of Fame inductee. This account of Leroy Paige's journey to white baseball's record books begins in a picture book biography illustrated with beautiful oil paintings. The Ransomes make it clear that although Satch made some mistakes early in his life, he had the will to claim the opportunities that could and did make all the difference. They pay tribute to the many accomplishments of Paige's contemporaries in the former Negro Leagues. Satchel Paige had his own way to doing what he and he alone did so very well. The Ransomes bring him to life as the unique, complicated man he was through a well written narrative and warmly created illustrations. CCBC categories: Biography and Autobiography; Historical People, Places, and Events. (GMK: May 29) 2000 Cooperative Children's Book Center
