Harry's Home

by Catherine and Laurence  Anholt

Published by U.S. edition: Farrar Straus Giroux, 2000
32 pages
ISBN: 0-374-32870-6

Ages 3 - 6

Harry loves living in the city with his mother, and he enjoys receiving his Grandad's colorfully illustrated letters about life on the farm. Now that Harry is big enough for an overnight away from home, he's pleased to receive a ticket to travel to the farm as a birthday gift from his grandfather. Before long, Grandad arrives to take Harry on his special trip to his farm -- they travel the distance by bus, train, boat and taxi. As different as Grandad's farm is from Harry's usual daily life, the little boy enjoys his visit immensely, especially his role in helping to care for a baby lamb. However, he's happy, and even a bit relieved, to return to the city when his mother comes to the farm after a week to take him back home. There he can play with his farm toys in what is - for him - home. Charming pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations are filled with details that contrast urban and rural life, and show the closeness between family members who each feel at home in distinctly different settings.
