Why Not?

by Mary Wormell

Published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2000
32 pages
ISBN: 0-374-38422-3

Ages 2 - 6

Exquisite linocut illustrations lend sophisticated style and grace to a barnyard drama about a mischievous young kitten who's learning about both pecking order and obedience. On a walk through the barnyard on their way home to supper, a mother cat continually admonishes her kitten with commands such as "Don't chase the chickens!" and "Don't scare the birds!" When the kitten asks "Why not?" after each command, he quickly learns the answer from other animal parents, who rush in by turns to protect their own babies from the little kitten: "Because I'll chase you!"answers a rooster and "Because I'll scare you!"answers a large, threatening crow. Although the kitten wisely backs off in each instance, he manages to get in the final word each time to assure himself and, by extension, young readers, that his survival is based on his own wits, rather than on blind obedience.
