My Dear Noel: The Story of a Letter from Beatrix Potter

by Jane Johnson

Published by Phyllis Fogelman Books / Dial, 1999
32 pages
ISBN: 0-8037-2050-5

Ages 4 - 8

(Ages 4-8) The Moore family of London, England, were good friends with artist Beatrix Potter, but it was their eldest son, Noel, who felt especially close to her. When Noel fell ill at age five and was bedridden for quite some time, Potter sent him an illustrated letter to cheer him up. The story and illustrations became the basis for her now classic children's book, Peter Rabbit. Jane Johnson's detailed pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations are filled with period details, but also show the lively, busy Moore family contrasted with the staid, quiet life of Beatrix Potter, shown in browntone paintings. An author's note provides background about the real Noel Moore and the early publishing history of Peter Rabbit. And, best of all, the endpapers show a facsimile of the original letter in its entirety. CCBC categories: The Arts; Picture Books for Older Children; Historical People, Places and Events.
