Daisy Kutter: The Last Train

by Kazu Kibuishi

Published by Viper Comics, 2005
192 pages
ISBN: 0975419323

Ages 12-17

Daisy Kutter is a reformed bandit in a strange wild west town where robots and cell phones area as common as poker games and shotguns. Her reform is short-lived when she’s approached to pull off one last heist. Although she says she “doesn’t work with robots,” the allure of this job is too much for her, and she partners up with a metallic cowboy against her better judgment. Daisy’s ex-partner-in crime and ex-love, Tom, is now the sheriff. He knows Daisy better than anyone. Despite his badge, Tom is on Daisy’s side when the going gets rough, whether she likes it or not. When it turns out that the heist is a setup, Tom is there to help Daisy out. But he’s the one who needs her help before the action is over in a fascinating graphic novel that blends elements of the rugged western with the eeriness of science fiction. Daisy is an archetype recast: the taciturn cowboy with a gender twist. This graphic novel has everything good visual storytelling requires: a great script that reveals a variety of nuanced characters, and subtle art that conveys the setting and even plot elements.  © Cooperative Children's Book Center
