In My Heart

by Molly Bang

Published by Little, Brown, 2006
32 pages
ISBN: 0-316-79617-4

Ages 1-4

Molly Bang’s picture book places the child listener firmly at the center of its reassuring, second-person narrative. “When I’m standing with other people waiting for the bus . . . you’re in my heart. . . And when I’m talking or eating or writing or watching . . you are still in my heart.” Throughout a day in which both the adults and the child are engaged in a variety of specific activities related to work and play (talking with other adults, building a sand castle, going potty, getting ready for bed) the refrain is repeated: you’re always in my heart. Bang’s affirming text is set against playful, vivid illustrations that extend the feeling of comfort with many soft, rounded edges and curves. The family Bang pictures is a white-skinned mother and father and a brown-skinned child. But adoption is never directly referenced in a story that is, purely and simply, about love.  © Cooperative Children's Book Center
