Angelina's Island

by Jeanette Winter

Published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2007
32 pages
ISBN: 0374303495

Ages 3-7

Ever since she came to New York City, Angelina has wanted to go back home to Jamaica. “We are home, Angelina,” Mama tells her, but nothing in New York compares to the food, friends and family that Angelina left behind. The end of summer in New York is marked by a festive Carnival parade, and Mama arranges for Angelina to take part. “You will glow like the sun” the ladies making her parade costume tell her. But as Angelina practices beneath the summer sun in the city, she still longs for Jamaica. Jeanette Winter’s stylized illustrations masterfully use color and composition to reflect Angelina’s feelings of discontent about her new home (dark, drab and chaotic) and longing for her beloved island (light, bright and airy). The illustrations and Winter’s short yet detail-rich text tell an engaging story about a little girl who discovers “home” isn’t just a place, but a feeling about a place. When parade day arrives in an explosion of sound and color—as brilliant and lively as Angelina’s picture-perfect memories of her homeland—the little girl finds joy and a sense of belonging both in and to the new place she finally calls “home.” (MS) ©2007 Cooperative Children’s Book Center
