In Our Mothers' House

by Patricia Polacco

Published by Philomel, 2009
48 pages

Ages 6-10

The loving, lesbian-parented family in which a girl grows up is the focus of this picture book describing many events over the course of her childhood. Growing up with two other adopted siblings, most of her memories are of fun times with family--immediate and extended-- and friends. A sense of humor, warmth and security is what she remembers most about her childhood, despite the occasional disapproval shown by a neighboring family becasue of her parents' relationship. A picture book written in the voice of the now adult daughter looking back ends in the bittersweet present: both her moms have now passed away, but their love and the love she received from them is what defines her memories.  © Cooperative Children's Book Center
