Wild Times at the Bed & Biscuit

by Joan Carris
Illustrated by Noah Z. Jones

Published by Candlewick Press, 2009
124 pages
ISBN: 978-0-7636-3705-7

Ages 7-10

Grampa Bender has offered The Bed and Biscuit Animal Boardinghouse to temporarily house animals from a wildlife shelter undergoing construction. A veterinarian, Grampa is able to provide medical care for an injured Canadian goose, a muskrat with an infected foot, and a pair of orphaned fox kits. His pets, Ernest the mini-pig, Gabby the mynah bird, and Milly the cat are ready to lend a hand whenever Grampa needs their help. Meanwhile, the youngest member of the household, Sir Walter the Scottie, ponders the lure of life in the wild as described by the foxes, compared to his predictable routine as a pet puppy. Amusing dialogue among the animal contingent and a near catastrophe (Sir Walter goes missing!) provide entertainment and suspense, while the proximity of tame animals to wild animals offers insight into the differences in their behaviors and habits. Frequent black-and-white pencil and watercolor illustrations complement the text, while an Authorís Note gives additional information on the wildlife featured in the story.
