The Aunt in Our House

by Angela Johnson
Illustrated by David Soman

Published by Orchard Books, 1996
32 pages
ISBN: 0-531-09502-9

Ages 4-8

“The Aunt” has come to stay. Sometimes she is melancholy and misses her home. Sometimes she is playful and full of fun. Intensely emotional watercolor and pastel illustrations capture the Aunt’s changing moods and the curiosity and love her niece and nephew experience as the Aunt becomes a part of their family. The children are biracial with a white father and a black mother, and the aunt is white. Although no mention of race is made in the text, the illustrations give a very realistic depiction of a biracial family.
