Lulu and the Rabbit Next Door

by Hilary McKay
Illustrated by Priscilla Lamont

Published by U.S. edition: Albert Whitman, 2014
91 pages
ISBN: 978-0-8075-4816-5

Ages 4-8

Animal-loving Lulu is determined to improve the lifestyle of George, the pet rabbit that has arrived with the new family next door. Lulu and her best friend and cousin Mellie are horrified by their classmate Arthurís adequate but emotionally indifferent care of George. Lulu considers kidnapping George so he can share in the love she showers on her rabbit Thumper, while Mellie suggests a more radical approach: kidnapping Arthur so he can get an idea of what George feels like cooped up all day. Both ideas are rejected in favor of a unique solution to show Arthur how interesting George is, and how much he can do if heís given the chance. Arthurís transformation from uninterested pet owner to involved pet lover is believably gradual, as is the friendship that develops between the three children. Humor and childlike sensibility pervade this fourth volume in the reliable series that began with Lulu and the Duck in the Park (U.S. edition: Albert Whitman, 2012), starring brown-skinned Lulu and her unflagging interest in animal encounters.
