Chimney Sweeps: Yesterday and Today
An accessible history of an occupation in which small children were employed to climb up inside chimneys to sweep and scrape. An interesting prose narrative relates the often dangerous daily life of these "climbing boys" as well as the social reform and technological advances leading to improved working conditions. The work of present day chimney sweeps in European nations and the United States is detailed, and William Blake's poem "The Chimney Sweeper" is included as are fine bibliography and index. ©1982 Cooperative Children's Book Center
