Winding Valley Farm: Annie's Story
Reviewed with First Farm in the Valley:
First Farm in the Valley features the first family to settle in the Latsch Valley near the Trempeleau River in northwest Wisconsin. Although Anna was born in Wisconsin, she longs to leave her birthplace and the chores expected of her to return to the Poland she imagines from her parents' stories. Winding Valley Farm focuses on the next generation and young Annie's disbelief that her family is considering moving to town in 1908. These two episodic short novels trace parallel Polish American seasonal and holiday activities and customs, as well as farm techniques as they change (or don't change) over the years. Both have a pronunciation guide/glossary and First Farm in the Valley also contains a family tree. These two welcome new editions will be joined by the three later novels following two subsequent generations of this fictional Polish American family that Pellowski created from her own family history and out of her expertise in children's culture: Stairstep Farm: Anna Rose's Story, Willow Wind Farm: Betsy's Story and Betsy's Up-and-Down Year, all schedule to be released by St. Mary's Press.
