William Shakespeare & the Globe
This highly visual work combines biographical information about William Shakespeare with information about Elizabethan times, London places, actors and the playhouses where they performed, along with an account of the late-20th-century campaign to rebuild Shakespeare’s Globe playhouse. Lively prose is paired with meticulously executed drawings and paintings that include comic-like panels, portraits, recreations of photographs and maps, and renderings of characters from some of Shakespeare’s plays. Discussion of how the new Globe was constructed is reminiscent of David Macaulay's early works about how buildings are created in this fresh, sometimes amusing, always intriguing work. ©1999 Cooperative Children's Book Center
