Can I Tell You a Secret?
A young frog shares a secret with readers and listeners: He’s afraid of water and doesn’t know how to swim. “You’re probably thinking, ‘But you’re a frog.’ I know. But I’m afraid.” The frog describes how he’s avoided the water (e.g., a doctor’s note) and, at the implied prompting of the book’s audience, finally shares the secret with his parents after a few false starts. It turns out they’ve known all along and are supportive in helping him take the next step. In this case, that would be learning how to swim. Anxiety, avoidance, and, ultimately, success all have their moment in a sensitive story full of quiet reassurance and gentle humor. Blithe watercolor and ink illustrations are a sprightly accompaniment to this highly relatable picture book. ©2016 Cooperative Children's Book Center
