If You Find a Rock
CCBC Review:
“If you find a rock, a nice flat, rounded rock that sits just right in the crook of your finger, then you have a skipping rock. You toss it out in the water just so and see it trip across the surface, making a chain of spreading rings. Maybe you find a soft white rock--a rock that feels dusty in your fingers. Then you have a chalk rock, and you use it to make pictures on the pavement.” This lyrical text resonates with young children by appealing both to their sense of touch and to the universal fascination children have with rocks. Whether they reside in urban, suburban, or rural areas, readers will be able to accept the book’s invitation to explore and think about earth and water--be it in a field or parking lot, a pond or a puddle. All may offer the possibility of a special rock. Highly Commended, 2001 Charlotte Zolotow Award©2000 Cooperative Children’s Book Center
