Leah's Mustache Party
CCBC Review:
When Leah dresses as a pirate for Halloween she likes her painted-on mustache so much that she begins to wear one regularly. “Some days before school, Leah would ask her mom, ‘Could you please draw a mustache on my face for me?’ Leah’s mom would always smile and say, ‘Yes, of course, my Leah.’” When Leah’s birthday rolls around she wants a mustache party, where “everyone has to wear the biggest, best mustache they can!” Although a few girls from school initially balk at the idea, everyone gets in the spirit by the time the party day arrives. A spirited, upbeat story about a child free to follow her own interests is based on the author’s own family: Her note includes a photo of her daughter, Leah, wearing a mustache. Author Nadia Mike is Inuit, and the art realistically reflects Inuit people with a range of skin tones and hair color (Leah in the story is red-headed, just like Leah in the photo), as well as the northern setting.
