Yoshi’s Feast
CCBC Review:
Yoshi the fan maker lives next-door to Sabu, who broiled delcious-smelling eels to sell the to few customers who came his way. Every night Yoshi watched Sabu gobble up all the leftovers, without once offering him a taste. Sabu thought it only fair that Yoshi pay for the eels if he wanted to eat them. A rift soon grew between the neighbors, with Sabu insisting that Yoshi pay for the privilege of smelling the broiled eels. Yoshi’s clever problem-solving leads to an amusing and satisfying resolution to this traditional Japanese tale. Kajikawa’s zesty retelling uses marvelous onomatopoeia that makes the story a pleasure to read aloud. Yumi Heo’s masterful oil, pencil and collage illustrations capture the humor and energy of the story. Highly Commended, 2001 Charlotte Zolotow Award ©2000 Cooperative Children's Book Center
