Mi Casa Is My Home
Lucía gives a tour of her family and joy-filled house in a picture book that seamlessly integrates Spanish and English. Lucía’s tour starts with the front door, la puerta, before moving through different spaces (la sala, la cocina, el patio, el baňo, el cuarto de mis hermanos), describing some of the things that happen in each one. She ends with her own bedroom, mi habitación. “Where I get tucked in con todos mis mejores amigos … where the lights get low and my eyelids close. Until I’m ready to wake up again tomorrow. En mi casa. With my favorite people.” Lucía’s family—Mama, Papi, Abuelo and Abuela, los hermanos—clearly make the house a home, one that welcomes her primos and “primos de mis primos de mis primos” and friends and neighbors. This beautiful, racially diverse family that includes Latine and Afro-Latine members has Puerto Rican, Cuban and Spanish heritage, for a start. Cheerful watercolor, colored pencil, and digital illustrations are a perfect match for this buoyant narrative. ©2022 Cooperative Children’s Book Center
