Reina Ramos Meets a Big Puppy
CCBC Review:
Reina (Latina) loves to practice gymnastics in the park with her friend Lila (Black). Lila does forward rolls while Reina works on her cartwheels. The young girls feel especially proud when neighbor, Ms. Carol, and her tiny dog, Gala, watch and cheer. Reina is excited when Lila announces that her family is getting a puppy, but the following week at the park, Reina is shocked to see that the puppy is HUGE (depicted as a large Burmese mountain dog). Reina does not want to admit that she fears Chico and avoids being near the dog or telling Lila about her discomfort. Readers will empathize with Reina’s worries and relate to the simple friendship problem explored in the second installment of this series. Spanish phrases are used in the text with a glossary provided in the back. ©2023 Cooperative Children’s Book Center
