Happy Halloweenie
CCBC Review:
Decision-making can be tough, especially when faced with the wide-ranging costume options available to Weenie, a hotdog with sartorial ambitions. Should he go with a classic and cute rotund pumpkin suit, or the equally timeless but scary cape and vampire fangs? Opposing outfits are paired, each summarized with a single word: “yucky” zombie or “yummy” ice cream cone, “breakfast” skillet of bacon and eggs or “dinner” burger, “yellow” banana or “green” Frankenstein? The visual juxtaposition of Weenie’s iconic sausage body sporting each get-up, complete with appropriate facial expressions (a Dragon Weenie casts a concerned side-eye towards a sword-toting Knight Weenie) infuses this board book with humor that can be appreciated by both young children and their adults. ©2023 Cooperative Children’s Book Center
