A Feather, a Pebble, a Shell
CCBC Review:
A young girl visits a variety of natural environments with a group of children and an adult leader. In each location, she finds a small natural object that she observes, holds, and leaves behind, off to the next adventure. A small text box defines each object and provides a few scientific facts. For example, after perching on a boulder in the Dan River, the girl watches the water flow over the round, black pebbles. A text box explains that the black rock was likely a basalt pebble formed from rapidly cooling lava 100,000 years ago. The girl and her group visit 11 locations around the country of Israel (a map is on the final page). Whether in desert, sea, cave, or beach, the girl’s temporary touch offers a moment of reflection, and connection to a particular place. In a note the author discusses her childhood exploring Israel with her parents and the country’s unique topographic, geological, and climate diversity. ©2025 Cooperative Children’s Book Center
