Great New Books for Children and Teens/Materials Challenge Readiness Training for Northwest Wisconsin Library Systems

CCBC librarians will highlight some of the books in CCBC Choices 2024, the most recent edition of the library’s best-of-the-year list, and offer training on preparing for and responding to book concerns and challenges at this workshop being held at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library in Eau Claire and sponsored by the library systems in central and northwest Wisconsin: IFLS, Northern Waters, WVLS.

Schedule:

  • 9:00-9:30 Arrival, registration, refreshments, and book browsing
  • 9:30-12:00: Materials Challenge Readiness. We will walk through ways to be prepared for and respond to IF concerns and challenges. This workshop will provide opportunities to acknowledge and decenter fear. We will focus on the reasons why public libraries do what they do when it comes to providing community members with diverse materials and a wide range of choices, and how to talk about it. We encourage all participants to review their library’s mission and selection and reconsideration policy and related procedures in advance. 12:00-1:00:
  • Lunch (on your own, refrigerator is available onsite) and book browsing
  • 1:00-2:30: Great New Books for Birth – High-School Age. The librarians from the Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC) will highlight some of the books in CCBC Choices 2024, the most recent edition of the library’s best-of-the-year list of books published for children and teens (from birth through high school). All 238 of the books from CCBC Choices 2024 will be available for hands-on book examination.
  • 2:30-3:00: Book Browsing

All of the books in CCBC Choices 2024, the newest edition of CCBC’s annual best-of-the-year list, will be available for hands-on book examination.
