Punk Rock Etiquette: The Ultimate How-to Guide for Punk, Underground, DIY, and Indie Bands
Even those who have no interest whatsoever in forming a band and going on the road will find Travis Nichol’s graphic novel how-to guide a riot. Artist and musician Nichols brings his talent with a pen together with his experience as a member of more than a dozen bands to create a hilariously funny and extraordinarily informative handbook for would-be and practiced young rockers. Chapter topics range from forming a band, writing and recording music and booking gigs to transportation, packing instructions, and a recipe for a healthy snack on the road. There’s information on stage etiquette (respect for the audience and other bands), collecting payment, and post-show etiquette (think about the ramification of the one-night stand). Merchandising tips include step-by-step instructions for screen printing t-shirts, producing CD sleeves, and making the most of the web. The practical narrative is written with genuine respect, but the delivery is laugh-out-loud funny. The illustrations include diagrams and examples, and an ongoing cartoon feature about a band (comprised of animal characters) living out the dream. ©2008 Cooperative Children's Book Center
