The Jones Family Express
Every summer Steven's Aunt Carolyn sends him postcards from her travel destinations. This summer, Aunt Carolyn is making a special trip home, just in time for the annual block party, when Steven's extended family gathers at the house where he lives with his Grandma. Wanting to welcome his favorite aunt with a meaningful gift, Steven uses paint and family photographs to convert a battered toy train into "The Jones Family Express." All the members of this African American ensemble enjoy the unique visual tribute to their realistically imperfect yet warmly loving family. Colorful mixed-media collage illustrations feature Steven's collection of Aunt Carolyn's postcards, sporting her lively and often humorous messages to her nephew. ©2003 Cooperative Children's Book Center
