The Three Questions
A handsome, provocative allegory poses three queries in more than one way: When is the best time to do things? Who is the most important one? What is the right thing to do? Young Nikolai's search for answers leads him to ask heron, monkey, and dog. But it's Leo, the old turtle, who gives him an answer. “Remember, then that there is only one important time, and that time is now. The most important one is always the one you are with. And the most important thing is to do good for the one who is standing at your side. This is why we are here.” The author's note at the end clarifies his intent regarding his use of Leo Tolstoy's idea, explains his decisions about names for his characters, and cites the classic Tolstoy story on which this is based.. An unusual picture story for the families and elementary school-age children invites discussion and contemplation. ©2002 Cooperative Children's Book Center
