A Thousand White Butterflies
Isabella has just moved from Colombia with her mother and grandmother, while her father is still back home waiting for his immigration papers to come through. She’s looking forward to starting school, even though it’s the middle of the school year and she doesn’t yet speak much English. So when a big snowstorm closes the school on what was supposed to have been her first day, she is heartbroken. Still, she’s intrigued by the snow, which she has never seen before; she thinks it looks like a thousand white butterflies. As she glumly watches out the window, she sees another little girl fall into the snow outside and she quickly bundles up and rushes out to help her get up. But the girl is making snow angels, and she shows Isabella how to join in. By story’s end Isabella can look forward to starting school with a new friend. Brightly colored crayon-and-acrylic illustrations depict two girls who find they have a lot in common even though they don’t speak the same language. ©2022 Cooperative Children’s Book Center
