Katie the Catsitter
To earn money for fees to join her best friend at Camp Bear Lake, Katie, who is white, tries to get work doing odd jobs in her apartment building. Watering plants, cleaning, and carrying groceries are all a bust, but a cat-sitting job for glamorous Ms. Lang in 5B has potential. It turns out brown-skinned Ms. Lang not only has a LOT of cats (217!) but they are individually extraordinary and collectively a force to be reckoned with. Mackerel is a semaphore expert; Mariposa has a photographic memory; Pierogi is skilled in textiles, Moe crafts and glue guns, Moritz counterattacks. The list of cats—and their unique talents—goes on. Katie has started to suspect Ms. Lang may be the alter ego of supervillain Mousetress, because Ms. Lang is always out when Mousetress commits a crime. But it turns out Ms. Lang and her cats are firmly on the side of good—is Katie ready to join them? This hilarious, hypoallergenic graphic novel with a secondary friendship plot is quirky, clever, and, to be continued. ©2022 Cooperative Children’s Book Center
