Fast Talk on a Slow Track
As the eldest son in a middle-class African American family living in Brooklyn, New York, 18-year-old Denzel finds that he has a hard act to follow--his own. Since first grade, he's been a star in his family, school, church and community and, after graduating as valedictorian of his high school class, Denzel is on his way to Princeton. Success has always come easily to Denzel until he attends a summer orientation program for minority students and discovers that the competition in college is stiff. His fear of failure consumes his thoughts throughout the remainder of the summer as he tries to figure out a way to break the news to his dad that he's decided not to go to college. ©1993 Cooperative Children's Book Center
