A Beautiful House for Birds (Storytelling Math)
(Reviewed with Who Jumps More?, Where Are the Eggs?, and Our Favorite Apples) Grace Lin adds to her math concept series with four new board books featuring three diverse preschoolers. In Who Jumps More?, about measurement, Olivia (Black) and Mei (Asian) take turns jumping in the snow like a rabbit (Olivia) and a reindeer (Mei), each covering the same distance in hops of different sizes. Where Are the Eggs? follows Mei’s search for the eggs her chickens laid; as she finds each one she describes its location in relations to objects around it (“next to,” “behind,” “under,” etc.). Olivia is painting a birdhouse in A Beautiful House for Birds, using different colors of paint to create a pattern that goes from simple to more complex. And in Our Favorite Apples, Manny (Latine) goes apple-picking with Olivia and Mei, and the three decide to sort their harvest by color. The brief volumes conclude with more about the skills that the featured concept in each book develops, and suggested “Try This” activities. ©2023 Cooperative Children’s Book Center
