CCBC Review:
Eric Bittle loves to bake, vlog, and skate. The former Junior figure skating champion from Georgia is now a freshman hockey recruit at Samwell University, where his Yankee teammates are big and loud and brash. All except team captain, Jack, who is quieter than the rest, almost smoldering when he turns his blue eyes on Bitty. In fact, Bitty is sure Jack hates him. Although raucous and sometimes crass, the other players are also unfailingly kind. Bitty comes out first to teammate Shitty, but no one on the team cares that he’s gay. Bitty bakes for the boys, and he’s learning to take checks from skaters twice his size thanks to Jack’s tutorials. By sophomore year, he is living in the hockey house, where the antics are never-ending and the unpredictable oven drives him nuts. And Jack? Jack, whose room is right across from Bitty’s, remains a mystery. Bitty will be as loved by readers as he is by his teammates in this riotously funny, endearing first entry in a new graphic novel series. Bitty is a genuine delight, the secondary characters are wonderful, and the sweetly satisfying love story that comes to fruition is icing…on the cake that is. ©2019 Cooperative Children’s Book CenterIllustrated by Ngozi Ukazu
