Tios and Primos
CCBC Review:
Visiting her papa’s homeland, a young Latine girl is anxious about meeting members of her large extended family for the first time. Every time she is introduced to a new uncle or cousin, she is asked if she speaks Spanish like her papa. “Más o menos” (“more or less”) is her standard response. She does know some Spanish but is intimidated to speak it while absorbing all the new sights and sounds on her travels. What she soon realizes is that her father’s family is simply glad to meet and spend time with her during their visit. Relatable exchanges, like enthusiastic hugs from unfamiliar grown-ups, and getting a manicure from a cool teen cousin, will be familiar to many children. Colorful illustrations convey familial love and warmth and the beauty of an unnamed country. ©2026 Cooperative Children’s Book Center
