Hornbeam By and Large
CCBC Review:
Affable moose Hornbean returns with friends Cuddy, Eureka, and Adorabelle for a third book in the series. Understated humor is perfectly matched with cheerful colored pencil and watercolor illustrations in these short stories. In the first, Hornbeam attends a swap meet with Eureka, where he trades an old badminton racket for a “Best Listener” trophy. In the second story, Adorabelle invites Hornbeam to play on her volleyball team, and after an antler-net entanglement, the game ends in a draw with waffle cones for all. Lastly, the whole gang attends Cuddy’s birthday party at Adventure World. While their exploits are often over-the-top, Hornbeam and company exhibit down-to-earth, affirming attitudes. ©2026 Cooperative Children’s Book Center
