Country Fair
CCBC Review:
Early one summer morning, trucks, tractors, and trailers, rumble into an empty field and workers begin to set up tents for the country fair that will take place that day. Some farmers groom their prize animals to get them ready for competition, while others wrestle "uncooperative pumpkins" in preparation for the vegetable weigh in. A judge samples banana bread. A bald man shears sheep. A yellow jacket hovers around a man eating an enormous lunch. In every little corner a small drama takes place. Collectively, they add up to a lively country fair, gracefully captured in Elisha Cooper's understated watercolor paintings and matter-of-fact, yet witty, prose. Highly Commended, 1998 Charlotte Zolotow Award ©1998 Cooperative Children's Book CenterIllustrated by Elisha Cooper
