My Best Friend
This authentic representation of friendship between young children captures a day of discovery and imagination. At times energetic and exuberant, the two girls also have moments of quiet and calm. They are new to the concept of best friends, but as the evidence mounts the narrator is convinced it must be so: “i think i know we are best friends because she LOVES strawberry ice cream and i HATE strawberry ice cream and we are still friends even then so that is something good." The day surges from one moment of play to the next, ending with anticipation for tomorrow when the new best friends will meet again—and may even learn each other’s name. Both girls appear white in the digitally rendered illustrations in which shades of red and green dominate. The art's sense of fluidity and movement is well-matched to the free-flowing whimsical narrative. Honor Book, 2021-2022 Charlotte Zolotow Award ©2022 Cooperative Children’s Book Center
