Everyone Gets a Turn
CCBC Review:
While playing in the woods, Bear, Turtle, Mouse, and Hare come across an egg and decide to care for it. When they can’t agree on who should take it home a voice from the egg weighs in: “Everyone gets a turn!” At Mouse’s, Little Egg is cold so Mouse builds a fire and provides warm clothes. At Bear’s, a crack is the first sign of change before “Little Egg became Little Bird.” At Hare’s, Little Bird tries lots of foods until she finds what she likes to eat. And at Turtle’s, Little Bird explores, asks questions, and has conversations. Each of the animals provides Little Egg/Little Bird with something crucial to growing and thriving; most important of all, however, is each animals’ tender care. By story’s end, Little Bird has made a home of her own and proclaimed her new name: Clara. The gentle, humorous story is told in short chapters through panels pairing dialogue with soft-toned, winsome illustrations in ink, watercolor, and pencil. ©2025 Cooperative Children’s Book Center
