Around America to Win the Vote: Two Suffragists, a Kitten, and 10,000 Miles

In 1916 Nell Richardson and Alice Burke started out from the East Coast in their yellow Baby Saxon, planning to drive to the West Coast and back to advocate for women’s suffrage. The roads were bad and road maps were nonexistent but they were committed, stopping at towns and cities along the way to make speeches and to call attention to their cause. Rockliff has pieced together their journey by painstakingly researching reports in local newspapers of the towns where they stopped. Her account is filled with humorous anecdotes about these remarkable women who drove across the country and back at a time when such trips were unusual.
