The word “kaleidoscope” likely brings to mind symmetrical, psychedelic patterns; less commonly known is that “kaleidoscope” is also the collective noun for a group of butterflies. This fantastically illustrated account makes use of both definitions as it explores the life cycle of butterflies. Amazingly detailed, three-dimensional paper sculptures of eggs, larvae, caterpillars, cocoons, and butterflies are arranged in vibrant kaleidoscopic circles that sprawl mesmerizingly across the page. Each one is labeled (“A kaleidoscope of hope,” “of growth,” “of change,” “of preparation,” “of exploration”) and accompanied by informational text about that stage of life. The narrative then shifts, asking if we’ll “be left with… / A kaleidoscope of nothing” as pesticides, climate change, loss of native habitat, and more threaten butterfly species. Calling for “a kaleidoscope of action”—a cut-paper kaleidoscope shows humans engaged in conservation activities—the account suggests changes that humans can make to help butterfly populations. “Now what?
